HIDEAWAYS SOMERSET COTTAGES
High quality holiday cottages throughout Somerset and in the city of Bath
The county of Somerset
The very name of this county is its best introduction – the summer shire; golden with cider and cheese, laden with strawberries and cream. Somerset has history, tradition, long folk memories but its image for the visitor is immediate and present – the glow of the ideal summer holiday. The area can be divided in four – in the north, the Mendip hills; mid-Somerset of ‘the Levels’; the upland areas of Exmoor and the Quantock hills; and the green hills of south Somerset along the Dorset border.
The Mendips well deserve their designation as an area of outstanding natural beauty. Stride or ride over them, discover their prehistoric circles or go underground at Cheddar Caves and Wookey Hole. At the foot of the Mendips is the tiny cathedral city of Wells while north of here, bordering the Cotswold hills, is Bath with its many architectural splendours.
South of the Mendip hills lie the Somerset Levels - a land of history where King Alfred took refuge from the Danes and where the last battle on English soil was fought at Sedgmoor in 1685. And a land of legend too – the Avalon of Arthurian tradition, with centres about Glastonbury and South Cadbury.
North west of here are The Quantock Hills and Exmoor National Park – an untamed landscape of heather-covered moorland and deep, wooded river valleys supporting a wealth of wildlife, native red deer and pure bred ponies.
